The Web of Things has a Book!

In 2007, Vlad and I were working at SAP Research on a European project called “SOCRADES” (disclaimer: vintage video content inside, remember this was 2007 :)). The goal of that project was to create a service layer for the Internet of Things. In short it was all about integrating real-world Things to applications so that the media gap between, say, real-world sensors and ERP applications would be drastically reduced. International Open Data Day on Saturday

Koubachi plant sensor is finally available!!

I know we covered them not so long ago, but our friends from Koubachi finally released their first product a few days back, it’s live finally and available! They have even already covered on Techcrunch and Gizmondo! Great job guys! For 148$, give your plant a voice and get one of these: The design of that WiFi dongle is pretty gorgeous and sleek (I wouldn’t dare saying Apple-y!) Wondering if they already have an API and we hack these and do something totally unexpected with it? Hmmm. What would you use these toys for, any ideas?

Important announcement – we joined EVRYTHNG Ltd.

Dear readers, today we have an important announcement to make: we both finished our PhDs, so are now officially “doctors” ;). Koubachi Launching Beta

A while ago, in an interview for Postscapes I was talking about a start-up, good friend of ours and spin-off of our research group at ETH which was building plant monitoring sensors. I had the chance to test them and was rather amazed by this practical, truly Web of Things type of project. They are just about to ramp-up production of their first hardware product – a WiFi Plant Sensor. Internal sources told me it’ll be launched in Spring 2012 but we’ll keep you updated on this one. Ambient Things on the Internet – ATI 2011

A few days ago, this call for paper was brought to my attention (thanks to Marino Linaje). It has two interesting aspects: 1) It is quite close to the CFP of WoT, the International Workshop on the Web of Things. 2) It was initiated by people from the service/Web communities which shows the increasing interest in the topic on the Web-side of Things (WoT was slightly more on the Things-side of Things, i.e., ubiquitous/pervasive computing).

HomeWeb and Android at Home – challenges?

Welcoming the Sun SPOTs to the Web of Things

It’s a known fact that we (or at least) love Sun SPOTs. Not the ones on the sun but the Sensor nodes developed by Sun Labs (now/soon Oracle Labs?) a couple of years ago. Speaking Java better than any language out there (including French ;-)), when the first fully-natively-java Wireless Sensor Nodes came out you can imagine my joy. Established in 2007, the Web of Things is a community of developers, researchers, and designers exploring the future of the physical Web. We want to leverage Web standards to interconnect all types of embedded devices and tagged products to make them easier to use and integrate in classic Web applications. WoT aims to build a future Web of devices that is truly open, flexible, and scalable, and we believe Web standards are the best way to do it.
