Building the Web of Things (WOT) Community

Dear all, Ok, Vlad and I have interesting (almost ;-)) things to say to the world but we are certainly not the only ones thinking about the Web of Things. Thus, the need to make this platform a … platform and not a two-man-show. A first step towards this goal is to start building a community of interested people. For that matter we added two widgets to the blog: WOTA COMMUNITY which is a Google Friends Connect community widget and WOTA CHAT! a chat box accessible to those who registered on the WOT COMMUNITY widget. We evaluated a number of...

Ercim news

I wanted to blog about this for a while already. I’ve been waiting eagerly to read the latest issue of ERCIM news, which had for special theme “The Sensor Web“. Usually they have interesting articles on many cool high-tech topics, but I have to admit that this issue was quite disappointing for me. In particular, they talk about the Sensor Web, which has nothing to do with our WWW. There is not single mention of URI or HTTP or REST in the whole issue, but there are many articles that talk about the same approaches. I find this quite disappointing,...

Installing Goodies…

[update] Ok it’s done for now, enjoy WOTA COMMUNITY and WOTA CHAT Hi all, in preparation for our lift workshop and BoF session we are currently adding community-oriented goodies, thus excuse us if the blog looks weird from time to time, we are just testing. Should be fixed by tonight!

LIFT workshop SOLD OUT! 2,518

LIFT workshop SOLD OUT!

Thanks to all the marvellous folks who signed up for our workshop @ LIFT. It’s been sold out for many days, yet people keep asking to join in desperately. We wish of course to have all of them join in, but as we want to make them all attendees work and think hard, we have decided to limit how many people join in to 25. That way we can ensure that people can work in small groups and be all productive. We have printed special badges for a special purpose (you’ll know why at the workshop), a couple more than...

The Web of Things meets Prof. Cesare Pautasso 11

The Web of Things meets Prof. Cesare Pautasso

For those who live in Switzerland (or not to far away) we will be presenting our work in the WOT at the University of Lugano on Thursday, March 26th. Besides the fact that Lugano is the sunniest place in Switzerland it is for us a pleasure to be invited by Prof. Pautasso. His work on REST architectures and especially on comparing and contrasting REST with WS-* (i.e. SOAP, WSDL, and the like) service has been quite inspiring for us. If I had to select one paper in this field it would certainly be that one: RESTful Web Services vs. Big...

WOT is that? 1,992

WOT is that?

Comrades, I have the feeling (okay it’s actually a fact) that the web of things is actually too much of a spiritual feeling, an aetherical concept with a lacking connection with the real world. In short, tons of people asking me “what the hell is all this fuss about Web of Things? Is it not the same as Internet of things? I don’t get it dude? Why not just use CORBA?”. Well, let me disappoint you. For many, it will be the same shock as learning that Santa Claus doesn’t exist (sorry for those who didn’t know that either). The...

Slow start = good signs 93

Slow start = good signs

Dear all (Dom, are you the only one to read this?), we’re sorry for having neglected this web site so much for the moment, and many of you might want to download the Web of things and install it on their laptop and iPhone. Well you just can’t. BUT, we’ve been teriffically busy here, as we worked totally hard to build our first prototypes and publish papers about it (so weird companies won’t come later and say “you bastard stole our idea”). It’s not your idea, not more than ours, coz the point of the Web of thing is just...

WoT at LIFT, so come and join us! 93

WoT at LIFT, so come and join us!

Folks, we’re submitting tons of proposals for LIFT in order to give an official start to the Web of Things (officially this site does not yet exist, so if you’re reading this consider yourself as the privileged early adopters)! First of all, we’re proposing an open stage with the hope to spread the ideas behind the Web of Things to the lift crowd to generate ideas (and hopefully fans!). We plan to release officially the web of things at that moment, and start building a community of people that want to take part in laying the basis of a future...

Afternoon talks at the Internet des Objets day 1,934

Afternoon talks at the Internet des Objets day

Jean-Louis Fréchin (ENSI) has been working for a long time in the design of technological objects, and gave an awesome talk about technologies from a designer perspective. The interface is an object. “Beau et bon” (beautiful and good) he says about the iPhone. He is making (building) digital artifacts, from services to objects rather than the other way around. It’s so much about software than hardware, and it’s becoming hard to differentiate between digital (software) interface and the hardware, there is tangible aspect to objects. “N0-Objects” – new digital objects, novel kinds on networked devices, all kinds of network structures, and...

Liveblog – Internet des Objets workshop

Today, Dominique and I went to Sierre for a meeting on the Internet of Things. It was hosted by at the technoark at Sierre and their activities. It’s a startup incubator with around 10 statups working on ICTs. Daniel Kaplan introduced the IoT. Cameras are a rich sensors that shall be integrated, on top of which different applications could be run (motion and people recognition). The Web came out from its virtual world and is integrating real objects. This brought us to the concept of cities? It’s about public places and the notion of information sharing, who is able to...
